I learned to say my address in Cantonese when I moved to Hong Kong so I could get home in a taxi. However, I frequently say it incorrectly and I have to try other ways of communicating: landmarks, repetition, Google maps. There is always a chance that the driver will shake his head, laugh at me, throw me out, or take me to the wrong side of the island, but accepting that I might fail and trying anyway allows me to survive, grow, and even thrive. I have to take a risk to accomplish the task. In education this is imminently relevant.

Parents often ask me how they can work with their children to improve their writing. Here’s one of the easiest ways: encourage your child to read as much as possible. Not only does reading provide much-needed stress relief from busy schedules, but it also enriches vocabulary, enforces correct grammar usage, and develops young writers’ written style.
